I organized our kitchen cupboards a couple of days ago and took some photos to share with you guys. We have a very narrow kitchen with very little storage space, so I thought I’d share some tips that I used to keep it organized.
We have barely any storage at all in this house. Our under-the-sink cupboard is basically the only space we have, aside from 4 drawers and our pantry.
My routine for organizing things is to remove everything from the cupboards so I can see what I’m working with, then group it into alike items, discard (donate, give away, store) anything I don’t use regularly or any duplicate items. We saved a lot of space doing this; we ended up with two crates full of cutlery and crockery. I gave lots away.We don’t have a dishwasher so avoiding lots of dirty dishes is really important for us, so to avoid people just going to the cupboard and taking out more and more dishes while the sink piles up, I removed all but 4 of everything. I figured that’s about all we really need, and I packed up some others into a storage crate incase we have any dinner guests one day. But for now, they don’t need to be kept with our everyday dishes. Now the only things in our cupboard are things that we actually need and use.
Cupboard after tidying, kids cups inside containers to group together, and only 4 of each "like" item
With all the duplicates removed, our drawers are much tidier and I’ve used small baskets to group items together inside.
We have very limited bench space and cupboards, so I put our buffet next to the kitchen bench to provide a bit more space. I now have space to keep my favourite recipe books and a bottle feeding station which helps me keep cans of formula and bottles off the kitchen bench.
Speaking of cans of formula, I recycled one to use as a utensil holder.
Our kitchen table is often used as a dumping ground for bags and things that we bring home, as we use our nearby back door as an entrance most of the time. So I put an overdoor hook system over the door so that we can hang up any bags or coats as we come inside and keep them out of the way. I also used some Command adhesive hooks to hang up some of our commonly-used utensils to reduce clutter in the drawers.I’m going to ask our landlord for permission to put up some floating shelves on the wall as there’s a lot of wasted, empty space there. I’ll keep you posted!
Psst, I also wrote a post on organizing the kitchen pantry!
