Organizing the Home: Kitchen Cupboards

Posted In: Home, Planning and Organization

I organized our kitchen cupboards a couple of days ago and took some photos to share with you guys. We have a very narrow kitchen with very little storage space, so I thought I’d share some tips that I used to keep it organized.

See? Such an awkward kitchen.

Another view

We have barely any storage at all in this house. Our under-the-sink cupboard is basically the only space we have, aside from 4 drawers and our pantry.

This is what was left after we'd given lots of things away!

My routine for organizing things is to remove everything from the cupboards so I can see what I’m working with, then group it into alike items, discard (donate, give away, store) anything I don’t use regularly or any duplicate items. We saved a lot of space doing this; we ended up with two crates full of cutlery and crockery. I gave lots away.

We don’t have a dishwasher so avoiding lots of dirty dishes is really important for us, so to avoid people just going to the cupboard and taking out more and more dishes while the sink piles up, I removed all but 4 of everything. I figured that’s about all we really need, and I packed up some others into a storage crate incase we have any dinner guests one day. But for now, they don’t need to be kept with our everyday dishes. Now the only things in our cupboard are things that we actually need and use.

Cupboard after tidying, kids cups inside containers to group together, and only 4 of each "like" item

With all the duplicates removed, our drawers are much tidier and I’ve used small baskets to group items together inside.

A drawer insert for the cutlery helps keep everything in order

We have very limited bench space and cupboards, so I put our buffet next to the kitchen bench to provide a bit more space. I now have space to keep my favourite recipe books and a bottle feeding station which helps me keep cans of formula and bottles off the kitchen bench.

Yay, recycling!

Speaking of cans of formula, I recycled one to use as a utensil holder.

Normally this has the potential to be strewn all over the kitchen table...

Our kitchen table is often used as a dumping ground for bags and things that we bring home, as we use our nearby back door as an entrance most of the time. So I put an overdoor hook system over the door so that we can hang up any bags or coats as we come inside and keep them out of the way.

Temporary utensil hooks (we're renting!) and Daniel's medication basket

I also used some Command adhesive hooks to hang up some of our commonly-used utensils to reduce clutter in the drawers.

I’m going to ask our landlord for permission to put up some floating shelves on the wall as there’s a lot of wasted, empty space there. I’ll keep you posted!

And this would be how I manage to get things done around the house...!

Psst, I also wrote a post on organizing the kitchen pantry!

I had one of those bouncy doorway things as a baby too, Dad says I LOVED it. Naturally I don’t remember it at all, my memories seem to start at about 2 or 3 years (I clearly remember chilling in my stroller, for example) so I must’ve been around 1 when we had the bouncer doohickey.

…I just remembered you guys don’t say stroller. Is it buggy or pram for you? Whichever, that’s what I’m talking about.

Those were great ideas! In fact, we also do that at home.

I hope that your landlord is okay with floating shelves.

I love this post so much. I always have my kitchen in a mess. I think I should get few of these stuffs for my kitchen. A drawer insert for the cutlery should be the first addition for me.

    Thanks for sharing.

It’s really hard organizing your kitchen because in every part of the house, kitchen is I think is where you’d stay the most. I’m so glad you did it! Good job! :)

Early day kitchen areas were not equipped with anything remotely like the beautiful kitchen cabinets of today.

Driving around is a dream, the roads have so little traffic on them
outside of the city and if you head over the alps mountains, the scenery
    is fantastic.
