14 weeks pregnant

We’re now 14 weeks pregnant and into the second trimester. Things are a lot smoother now. My first trimester was hell, with morning sickness at 7-9 weeks and extreme fatigue throughout. I was also stressed beyond belief. We had a scan with our new obstetrician at 12 weeks and baby was so active! We could clearly see arms, bum and head. Bub was waving it’s arms around, stretching out and at one point, turned to face us on the screen. We go back at 16 weeks to see the midwife and obgyn again, and to book into the hospital. We will get photos from our scans put on a USB stick then, I can’t wait to upload them all to my Flickr, haha. Daniel and I have received a bit of flack for choosing to go through the private hospital system. People are just constantly questioning why we aren’t “just going to the Royal” and pointing out that “if something goes wrong they’ll just send you over there anyway”. Since being pregnant, I’ve realized that people everywhere seem to be very vocal about their opinions on things regarding pregnancy, birth and parenting…interesting, since they’re all things that are (or should be) very personal. Most of the time I just smile and nod…while thinking to myself, “yeah whatever”. I’m still covered by my parent’s health care fund…so why not go private? I like the personalized service; we have just one obstetrician throughout the entire pregnancy and birth, whereas in the public system you’re given whoever’s available on the day. Scan quality is 100% better, you do not have to share a room in hospital (you’re given your own room, some with a double bed) and you’re given a celebratory platter and champange after the birth. You’re also welcome to spend up to 5 nights in hospital post-birth to focus on breastfeeding and recovery. Yes, it’s more expensive, but as I said, I’m covered by a health care fund and this is one of life’s milestones. There’s no reason why we shouldn’t do what we feel is best for us.

We’ve settled well into the new house and cohabiting. The cats get along just fine, they never fight at all and play together often. Daniel proposed on the 22nd of December with a beautiful ring that I’ve taken to be resized. I get it back on Monday, yay! Christmas day was great, we spent the morning and evening with my parents and spent the afternoon having Christmas lunch with Daniel’s family.
